It’s pretty clear that Smith had the outside zone while Jones had the inside zone. Jones bit on Luck’s move and vacated his space which resulted in an easy Wayne TD over the middle. You could see after the score that Smith ripped off his chin straps and immediately started to finger point at Jones who was out of position. Coyle calls many zone schemes and this was just another one of them that didn’t work on Sunday as Luck was just playing at an all pro level (party because the Fins didn’t put any good pressure on him). Even on the deep pass where you show that Clemons bit on an inside move and it resulted in a bomb over the middle to Avery with Smith covering man to man. Smith wasn’t exactly burned; Avery is a faster player and Smith still was at ‘arms length’ to him which is decent coverage 48 yards downfield but the pass was absolutely perfect and in a place where only Avery could catch it unfortunately. It was a disaster all around for the defense who couldn’t get any real pressure on luck, convert on any INT opportunities, or even defend properly when in zone.
